Founded in 1834, St. James is the oldest Episcopal congregation in Chicago... Was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire [October 8, 1871] .. In 1875, exactly four years and one day after the Great Fire, a newly rebuilt and even more splendidly appointed church was officially completed and blessed ...
Paul Popp Memorial Font ... Carved in Rome from Carrara marble by American sculptor Augusta Freeman; at a time when women sculptors were uncommon, the Font is still used for baptisms today and greets everyone who enters St. James.
One can see elaborate stencil works in the interiors and experts call it as one of the best example of Victorian stencil works in the world.
