John W. Root [1850-1891] was one of the founders of the leading Chicago Architecture firm of "Burnham and Root", is one of the leaders of the "Chicago School” of architecture. Although Root spent his career breaking away from architectural tradition, members of his firm created a totally traditional Celtic cross, which Root had admired in English cemeteries. Charles Atwood chose a Druid style, and Jules Wegman provided the design, which includes one of Root’s drawings, the entrance to the Phoenix Building, which did not rise from its own ashes when it was demolished in 1959.

Martin A. Ryerson [1818-1887] was a lumber merchant and developer. At his death in 1887, his son commissioned this mausoleum from Louis H. Sullivan, who had designed four downtown office buildings for Martin Ryerson.

The polished black granite tumb is inspired by Egyptian funerary forms. the mastaba for the lower portion and the pyramid for the top.

Howard Van Dorn Shaw [1868-1926] was a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright and others of the Prairie School of Architecture, but he was not one of the group. His designs remained traditional. This made him a favorite of wealthy residents of Lake Forest and other North Shore communities, for whom he designed many country homes.

The bronze ball on top of the elegant granite pillar contains the words of the 23rd Psalm.
The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

Peter Schoenhofen [1827-1893]..was the owner of the Schoenhofen Brewery. The grave is marked by a pyramid-shaped mausoleum. Its door is flanked on one side by an Egyptian sphinx and on the other by a Victorian angel.

The flat slab of black granite was designed by his grandson Dirk Lohan. Mies came to Chicago from Germany to direct the architecture department of Armour Institute. It is now known as Illinois Institute of Technology. Mies steel-&-glass buildings revolutionized modern architecture and established the "International Style".

Marshall Field [1835-1906]..
Sculptor Daniel Chester french titled the sad-faced woman as "Memory" ..She holds oak leaves, a symbol of calm courage. On the sides are carved "Equity" and "Integrity".









At the base of the statue is the emblem of the caduceus, the staff of Mercury, Roman God of commerce. However the symbol today represents medicine.

Architect: McKim, Mead and White [1902]

Potter Palmer [1826-1902] and Bertha Palmer [1849 - 1918] lie within the two large granite sarcophagi. The inverted torches on the sides symbolic of death. Three generations of their descendants lie beneath the floor around them. McKim, Mead & White designed their tomb the style of a Greek temple, which is the largest in Graceland.
