The Grand Reception Hall: Wall murals

Posted on 7:21 PM by babli panday

Paths of Peace..
By Eugene Francis Savage
The two figures in the right foreground, Man and Woman, are tilling the soil, planting in Adversity, with the Hopeful anticipation of the abundant Fruition of their Plans. The scene above signifies the Fulfillment or Promise of their Rewards, represented by their Vision of the Harvest Time, with its Sheaves, Fruits and New Wine. The Woman longs to become a Mother of a Child, admired for Her Beauty...

The Armistice..
By Eugene Francis Savage
The Field of Battle, Europe, November 11, 1918.
The principal figure near the center is the Madonna, the Mother of Christ, the Prince of Peace. She portrays the bereaved mother with raised hands in a gesture of stopping contending forces from opposite sides. She looks down sorrowfully upon the figure of Hope, now chained to a gun carriage, symbolizing ruthless force. Those who have come to grief and defeat in the trenches are crawling out. An old clock, stopped at the Hour of Eleven, indicates the significant hour of the signing of the Armistice – the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of November, 1918. The idols and gold cloth flung about represent the ruthless destruction of churches and things made by Man. The hands pointing accusing fingers and the expression of horror on the faces of the soldiers on the top right effectively recall the unspeakable Horror of War. Balancing this are the American Soldiers, on the left, with Smiles of Joy, who are beginning the Celebration of the End of the War. They have just heard the news of the Armistice, and are ringing a bell salvaged from the ruins, upon which they carry a French peasant girl. The Dove, Olive Branch and Rainbow fill out the scene, indicating Promise of a New Peace...

The Grand Reception Hall..
Beautiful murals on the ceiling of the Grand Reception Hall..
One would except more information on these..
But I couldn't find any, which is disappointing.
Although there is good enough materials detailing the allegorical murals on the walls of the Grand Reception Hall, as shown in the previous post, click here.... But nothing about the murals on the ceiling.

The Elks National Memorial: Entry to the Grand Reception Hall

Charity, Fraternity and Justice..
By Edwin Howland Blashfield..
As one walks from the Rotunda to the Grand Reception Hall, there's a small lobby at the entrance of the Hall.. It features three murals, titled.. Charity, Fraternity and Justice.

Add caption

Charity.. [North]
By - Edwin Howland Blashfield..
The topmost figure symbolizes abundance. A gull with loaves and gull with cloth are angelic characters bringing food and raiment to be distributed to the worthy and the needy. Center figure (arms outstretched) is the Spirit of Charity who recommends these people as worthy of the gift of mercy. Figures at lower right represent those in want, the worthy and the needy. A girl with scales (upper right) symbolize justice, equality and fairness. The mother with child in outstretched arms is emblematic of the desire of the human soul, from the beginning of life to reach that, which rises above or is unobtainable. The child in the foreground symbolizes curiosity...

Fraternity.. [South]
By - Edwin Howland Blashfield..
Four male figures represent manhood, swearing by the everlasting fire of life, to remain united forever in brotherhood, in need or in prosperity, are symbolic of brotherly love or fraternity and thought to be suggested by the legend of the old Athenian oath. In the mural at right, the central figure depicts the Spirit of Brotherly Love. The figure at left symbolizes power, resting arms on Roman fascia, emblematic of union. The figure at right symbolizes wisdom. Doves represent love and peace. Children with musical instruments in the foreground are emblematic of harmony...

Justice.. [East]
By - Edwin Howland Blashfield
The center figure is that of Justice, neither blind nor blindfolded but with eyes wide open. Justice is flanked on each side by her handmaidens, the maiden holding the book of the law represents fidelity. The second maiden holds the scales of justice on her lap and bears the two-edged sword of truth. The small maiden holds the mirror of introspection. This scene represents justice tempered with brotherhood.
